Firefighter/Fire Prevention Officer

As our Firefighter/Fire Prevention Officer and a member of the Town of Olds Fire Department, you will

help protect our community through both proactive and reactive duties, such as conducting code

inspections, fire education and prevention programs, and fire suppression activities. Every day you will

work to implement the Quality Management Plan (QMP) by detecting fire hazards, recommending

prevention measures, ensuring compliance with the fire code, planning, and participating in fire prevention

and education, and responding to emergency calls during regular work hours. To thrive in this role, you

must have experience in referencing and enforcing the National Fire Code-Alberta edition at the B1 and

C2 level, creating fire education programs, and have been or are a member of a paid-on-call (volunteer)

or full-time fire department with NFPA 1001 certification. We are seeking someone who takes pride in

The Town of Olds Fire Department is a busy and highly professional department made up of a mixture of

full-time and paid on-call members. The department responded to 435 calls in 2022. The department

responds to a variety of calls including structure fires, motor vehicle collisions, medical response, and

wildland fires. With a modern fleet and NFPA accredited fire training facility, the department is proud to

serve the Town of Olds and Mountain View County.

  • Creating positive customer experience while implementing the QMP, and in an

enforcement/inspection role

  • Being a firefighter who has responded to a variety of calls.
  • Creating and implementing a fire education program for the community.
  • With extensive exposure to code enforcement, fire prevention and fire suppression terminology

and processes.

  • Understanding that adaptability and collaboration are foundational to success in this role.

The wage range for this position is $42.82 – $48.59 per hour. The annual salary is based on a 37.5-hour work week.

Town of Olds Job Description

JOB TITLE: Firefighter/Fire Prevention Officer

DEPARTMENT: Protective

Services

JOB REPORTS TO: Deputy Fire Chief -Training & Support Services

FUNCTION/PURPOSE: The Firefighter/Fire Prevention Officer will perform duties, both in emergency and

non-emergency situations, related to fire protection, emergency medical services, hazardous materials

response, rescue, and emergency management delivery. This position will also help to prevent fires and other

emergencies through public education and fire code inspections to ensure properties meet fire regulations and

other safety code requirements. The Firefighter/Fire Prevention Officer will be certified by the Alberta Safety

Codes Council in the fire discipline and given designation of powers pursuant to the Safety Codes Act to

function as both a fire investigator and inspector.

# KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (% time)

  1. Incident Response
  • Respond to daytime fire incidents and conduct tasks including interior attack, ventilation,

salvage, overhaul, or fire ground operations as required.

  • Respond to daytime emergency medical incidents and serves as a medical team

member as required.

  • Participate in emergency rescue operations and supports specialized teams including

incidents involving water, vehicles, machinery, collapse, trench rescue, elevated or high

angles.

  • Drive and operate emergency vehicles including pumpers and aerial devices safely and

efficiently.

  • Familiarize and safely operate all firefighting, medical equipment, and related rescue

tools; including fire streams and other practices as directed through the Standard

Operational Guidelines.

  • Maintain Olds Fire Department Minimum Attendance requirement for training

participation.

  • Participate in weekend training as required.

  1. Quality Management Plan Inspections (QMP)
  • Ensure scheduling and compliance to meet QMP inspection frequency set out by Town

Council.

  • Inspect structures for fire code compliance, specifies remedial action, and follows up for

compliance.

  • Monitors and follows up on outstanding deficiencies found on inspections in accordance

with the QMP.

  • Ensures accurate records are maintained as outlined in the Fire Schedule of the QMP.
  • Ensures accurate information is reported to the Office of the Fire Commissioner relating

to fire investigations within the jurisdiction.

  • Make sure all relevant code and standards have been met before structures are given

approval for occupancy.

Recommendations

  • Make recommendations to the Fire Chief on enhancements and adjustments to the

QMP as required.

  • Provide reporting and trend recommendations on areas of risk in the community.

  • Analyze community needs for fire safety education and prevention activities.
  • Evaluate needs for public education and prevention programming based on fire trends

locally and provincially.

  • Administrate and schedule community fire safety education, prevention activities, and

fire station tours.

  • Collaborate with other town departments on training, special projects, and community

events (fireworks, outdoor rinks, parades, festivals).

  1. Technical
  • Maintain current knowledge of the Alberta Fire and Building Codes.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

standards in relation to fire safety.

  • Work collaboratively with Health and Safety/Building Code partners to conduct

inspections, investigations or to act on unsafe acts or operations.

  • Write reports related to dollar loss fires and report to the Alberta Fire Commissioners

Office.

  • Actively participate in Safety Code Council events and training.
  • Awareness of fire trends and statistics provided by the Alberta Fire Commissioners

Office.

  • Evaluate development proposals, review buildings and renovation plans to ensure

conformation to minimum safety standards.

  • Lead fire investigation activities as required.
  • Formulate action plans for inspection procedures and timeframes.
  • Determine unsafe conditions that warrant immediate action with respect to the Alberta

Fire Code and implement remediation.

  • Administrate and report on the Town of Olds QMP- Fire and Alberta Milenet.

  • Make recommendations and reports to the Fire Chief on Code related items.
  • Make recommendations and reports to the Fire Chief in relation to the Town QMP.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Minimum Grade 12 or GED, OR post-secondary education in Fire Services is an asset.
  • Minimum Class 3Q License – Class 4 would be considered an asset.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Level II
  • NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator – Aerial Operator would be an asset.
  • NFPA 472 Operations level
  • NFPA 1021 & NFPA 1041 would be considered an asset.
  • Certification as a Group B Level 2 Fire Inspector (Alberta)
  • Certification as a Group C Level 2 Fire Investigator (Alberta)
  • NFPA 1031 & NFPA 1033 would be considered an asset.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100 – ICS 200 would be considered an asset.
  • Standard First Aid CPR/AED “C”, Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Advanced First Aid (AFA) designation

would be an asset

Experience: 2 years fire service experience preferred. Experience as a past or current member of a Paid-On-Call Fire

Department would be an asset. Previous experience as a Fire Inspector in Alberta,
