Firefighter Responsibilities

As a Surrey Firefighter, you will:

• Respond to structure fires, vehicle fires, and emergency incidents.
• Perform rescue operations and assist at medical emergencies.
• Participate in fire prevention inspections and public education programs.
• Support community safety initiatives.
• Work alongside Fire Dispatch and Communications personnel.
• Complete reports and emergency documentation.
• Participate in ongoing firefighter training and professional development.
• Maintain firefighting equipment and operational readiness.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident)
• Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
• Minimum two years of work experience after high school
• Valid Class 3 or Class 1 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement (or equivalent)
• Current BC First Responder Licence (FR), Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP)
• Fluent in written and spoken English
• Meet NFPA 1582 medical and psychological standards
• Available to work 24-hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs
• Reside within Metro Vancouver or the approved response area
• Successfully complete the Surrey Fire Service Basic Firefighting Knowledge Course or possess NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I or II (IFSAC/Pro Board) certification

• Post-secondary education, apprenticeship, diploma, degree, or Red Seal certification
• Experience in firefighting, policing, healthcare, military, Coast Guard, lifeguarding, wildfire service, or search and rescue
• Hospitality or customer service experience
• Volunteer or non-profit experience
• Coaching or instructor certifications
• Strong computer skills
• Experience working in team environments
• Fluency in additional languages or American Sign Language (ASL)
