The Ottawa International Airport Authority’s (OIAA) Security, Emergency Management and Customer Transportation team is accepting applications for a Firefighter.

Reporting to a Fire Crew Captain, the successful candidate will be a member of the OIAA’s Airport Fire Service, which operates in accordance with the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).

Essential functions:

  • Responds to emergency situations according to the regulatory requirements of the CARs;
  • Participates in the development of tactical operations at all emergency situations;
  • Participates in operations as required by the Fire Captain;
  • Displays teamwork and a desire for learning and advancement;
  • Plays an active role in the preservation of life, property, and environment;
  • Prevents, extinguishes and protects exposures from fire loss;
  • Administers advanced first aid and CPR/defibrillation;
  • Participates in salvage and overhaul operations after a fire has been extinguished;
  • Participates in the research on technological change and evaluates programs and procedures relating to operations and equipment;
  • Participates in airport community education and public relations as required; and
  • Conducts fire inspections.

The successful candidate must be able to participate in and successfully complete an Airport Fire Fighter qualifying program, NFPA 1003 Standard. They must have excellent analytical and situational awareness skills accompanied by a good sense of judgment.  The successful candidate must be conscientious and dependable, must be able to work as a team member and be willing to perform any task assigned.  These abilities, as well as a professional, positive attitude will ensure success in building positive working relationships both internally and externally.

Qualifications for this position include:

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada (persons legally entitled to work in Canada are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents and/or holders of a valid work permit);
  • Obtained their Ontario Secondary School Diploma OSSD (Grade 12) or academic equivalent diploma;
  • NFPA Standard 1001 Level 1 & 2 qualified;
  • Qualified to NFPA 1002 Standard;
  • Qualified to NFPA 472 – Operations level Standard;
  • Demonstrated initiative, autonomy, positive attitude and a sense of responsibility;
  • Demonstrated mental alertness and mechanical aptitude;
  • Physical, mental, and emotional health; and
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal) in English.

The following will be considered as assets:

  • Qualified to NFPA 1003 Standard;
  • Qualified to NFPA 1021 Standard;
  • Current annual live fire certification as per the regulatory requirements of the CARs; and
  • Bilingualism (English and French).

Candidates must be in possession of an Ontario Provincial Driver’s Licence Class DZ or Class 3, or the equivalent from another province along with a driver’s abstract (issued within the last month), successfully complete a security clearance check for an Airport Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC), and an Airport’s Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP – D) within 90 days of hire. A copy of IFSAC certificates must be provided at time of application.
