Firefighters perform a wide variety of emergency response duties, including:

  • Responding to fire alarms and emergency incidents as part of a platoon

  • Laying and connecting hose lines and operating fire streams

  • Administering first aid and emergency medical assistance

Firefighters regularly train with specialized equipment including:

  • Hydraulic rescue tools

  • Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)

  • Fire pumps and hose systems

Minimum Firefighter Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following mandatory qualifications to apply for firefighter positions.

Employment Eligibility

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Firefighter Certification

Candidates must possess:

  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I

  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level II

These certifications demonstrate competency in professional firefighting standards.

Driver’s Licence Requirements

Applicants must hold:

  • Ontario Class D Driver’s Licence

  • Z Air Brake Endorsement

Candidates must provide a Driver’s Abstract issued after January 1, 2026.

First Aid and Medical Certification

  • Standard First Aid Certification

  • CPR – Health Care Provider (HCP)

Background Check

Applicants must provide an original Criminal Record Check issued after January 1, 2026.


Firefighter Physical and Aptitude Testing

All candidates must complete firefighter screening through Firefighter Services of Ontario.

Testing includes:

  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

  • Clinical Assessment

  • CPS Aptitude Test

  • Acrophobia Test

  • Fifteen-minute tread water test

Candidates must also complete an Emotional Stability and Resiliency Assessment as part of the screening process.

All core assessments must be completed within one day.


Firefighter Recruitment Process

The recruitment process for the City of Niagara Falls includes several stages.

Stage 1 – Application

Applicants must review the recruitment guide and submit an application through the City’s careers page.

Stage 2 – Firefighter Services of Ontario Screening

Candidates must register for testing before March 27, 2026 and complete testing before April 26, 2026.

Stage 3 – Application Submission

Completed applications and supporting documentation must be submitted to Firefighter Services of Ontario.

Stage 4 – First Interview and CritiCall Testing

Selected candidates will complete:

  • Panel interview

  • CritiCall multitasking test

Stage 5 – Second Interview

Applicants invited to this stage must provide two supervisory references.

Stage 6 – Medical Examination

Candidates must complete a medical examination based on NFPA 1582 firefighter medical standards.

Stage 7 – Offer of Employment

Successful applicants will receive a conditional employment offer following reference checks.


Firefighter Career Advancement

Firefighters hired by the City of Niagara Falls begin their careers as Probationary Firefighters.

Career progression typically includes:

  • Probationary Firefighter

  • First Class Firefighter (after approximately four years)
