🎓 Mission Firefighter Education Requirements
Applicants must have:
High School
✅ Grade 12 graduation
Applicants must provide a transcript demonstrating completion.
Post-Secondary Education or Work Experience
Applicants must have either:
🎓 At least one year of post-secondary education, equal to approximately 30 academic, technical or trades credits
OR
💼 At least two years of accumulated work experience after high school, equivalent to full-time hours.
Work experience related to fire service needs is preferred.
Examples include:

🔥 Required Firefighter Certification
Applicants must have successfully completed an approved firefighter training program resulting in a minimum of:
Firefighter Level 2 Certificate – NFPA 1001
Certificates must have a:
🏅 Pro Board or IFSAC seal
The posting also allows candidates to qualify through either:
- Current membership in Mission Fire Department’s paid-on-call program, or
- At least one full year in a career fire department.
🚛 Mission Firefighter Driver’s Licence
Applicants must have:
Valid BC Class 3 Driver’s Licence or higher
The licence must include the required air brake endorsement for vehicles with more than two axles.
Class 1 licences are also accepted.
An automatic transmission licence is accepted.
Applicants without this qualification may only be considered if they can obtain the required qualification by the date of an official job offer.
🚗 Driver’s Abstract Requirements
Applicants must submit a current driver’s abstract dated no more than 30 days before the application closing date.
The driving record must demonstrate responsible and safe driving behaviour.
The posting requires:
- No more than 6 demerit points in any one year
- No more than 9 points during the previous five years
- No suspensions under Section 215 of the Motor Vehicle Act
- No convictions under Section 320.14 of the Criminal Code of Canada
- No current suspensions
- No pending charges
The driver’s abstract should display a status of:
NORMAL
If the abstract displays HOLD, additional information may be required before advancing through recruitment.

🇨🇦 Eligibility Requirements

💪 Physical & Medical Requirements
Candidates must be physically fit for the position and medically fit according to NFPA 1582 standards.
Applicants must successfully complete the Mission Firefighter Physical Ability Test (FPAT).
Medical clearance from a medical professional is required to participate in the physical ability testing.
A satisfactory medical examination meeting the firefighter pre-employment protocol and NFPA 1582 standards is also required.

🏃 Mission Firefighter Physical Testing
The physical testing process includes several components.
🏊 Swim Test
Candidates must complete:
- 5 minutes of treading water
- 150-metre continuous swim
- 50-metre tow
🏃 12-Minute Run
Candidates must complete:
6 laps of the track in 12 minutes
💪 C-PAT
Candidates complete timed C-PAT stations consecutively while wearing a:
50-pound weighted vest
The stations are scored based on time.
🧠 Mission Firefighter Written Exam
Candidates selected to continue through the process will be invited to participate in the written examination.
Candidates must successfully complete the applicable recruitment stages before progressing to physical testing, interviews and subsequent assessments.
👥 Panel Interview
Successful candidates will advance to a panel interview.
The panel includes representatives from:

🚒 Mission Firefighter Ride-Along
Candidates who successfully complete the panel interview may be invited to participate in a ride-along.
The ride-along is designed to assess candidate fit with the crew and department.
Candidates will:
- Attend a day shift from 08:00–17:00
- Observe department operations
- Participate in training with crews
- Complete skills assessments
- Assist with station duties
- Gain exposure to the workflow of a career fire department
Candidates will not verbally or physically participate in emergency calls.
The ride-along may be evaluated by members of the training division and hiring committee.
👨🚒 Skills Assessment
Candidates may complete various NFPA 1001-related skills assessments during the ride-along process.
The assessment activities will be demonstrated to candidates before they begin.
Some assessments may be timed.
🔥 Fire Chief Interview
Successful candidates progress to an interview with the Fire Chief.
The Chief’s interview assesses areas including:
- Motivation
- Character
- Experience
Following the Chief’s interview and any additional testing, candidates may receive:
- A conditional offer of employment, or
- Placement into an eligibility pool
