The Hamilton Fire Department is seeking candidates who can demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, integrity, sound judgment and the ability to remain calm and effective during emergency situations.

🚒 Hamilton Firefighter Duties

Probationary Firefighters with the City of Hamilton perform a wide range of emergency and public safety responsibilities, including:

  • Responding to structure fires and other emergency incidents.
  • Performing fire ground operations under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Searching for, rescuing and evacuating occupants.
  • Controlling, confining and extinguishing fires.
  • Protecting lives and minimizing property loss.
  • Performing primary and secondary searches.
  • Providing first aid and preparing patients for transport.
  • Responding to medical emergencies and providing symptom-assist interventions.
  • Responding to motor vehicle collisions.
  • Performing technical rescue operations.
  • Responding to carbon monoxide alarms, natural gas leaks and false alarms.
  • Controlling hazardous materials incidents.
  • Operating fire apparatus safely and defensively.
  • Inspecting firefighting apparatus and equipment.
  • Maintaining equipment and reporting deficiencies.
  • Participating in fire safety inspections.
  • Assisting with pre-fire planning.
  • Performing station cleaning, maintenance and administrative duties.
  • Operating radios, computers, phones, tablets and other communications equipment.
  • Participating in public fire prevention education and community activities.
  • Participating in specialty training programs and emergency response courses.

🎓 Hamilton Firefighter Qualifications

Applicants for the Hamilton Fire Department Probationary Firefighter position must meet the qualifications outlined in the recruitment posting.

High School Education

Candidates must have:

  • Grade 12 or an approved equivalent.

🚗 Class DZ Driver’s Licence

Applicants must possess and maintain:

  • Valid Ontario Class DZ driver’s licence
  • Zero demerit points
  • A driving record satisfactory to the City of Hamilton

The DZ licence must be maintained throughout the recruitment process.

❤️ First Aid & CPR

Candidates must possess current:

  • Standard First Aid
  • CPR Level C

First Aid certification must be issued by a training agency recognized by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

Applicants must clearly identify their First Aid certification on their resume and be prepared to provide proof during the assessment process.

💪 Physical Requirements

Hamilton Firefighters must have the physical strength, stamina and agility required to perform demanding firefighting and rescue work.

Candidates must be capable of:

  • Performing strenuous physical work.
  • Operating firefighting and rescue equipment.
  • Working for prolonged periods under adverse conditions.
  • Working in confined spaces.
  • Working at heights.
  • Performing emergency response duties safely and effectively.

Applicants must also be capable of learning and applying firefighting, fire prevention and rescue techniques.

🧠 Emergency Response Skills

Successful candidates must be able to:

  • Make decisions quickly during emergencies.
  • Remain calm under pressure.
  • Follow policies, procedures and the chain of command.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Work effectively as part of a professional firefighting team.
  • Follow a highly structured work environment.

Candidates must also be able to acquire knowledge of hazardous materials, poisonous substances, arson detection, life safety systems and other subjects related to firefighting.

👁️ Medical & Vision Requirements

Candidates who advance in the recruitment process may be required to complete a medical assessment conducted by a third-party organization.

The posting identifies the following vision requirements:

  • Minimum 20/30 corrected OR 20/40 uncorrected vision in both eyes tested together.
  • Normal depth perception.
  • Normal colour vision.

👮 Police Vulnerable Sector Check

Candidates who proceed in the recruitment process will be required to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check at their own expense.
