Firefighter/Engineer Job Opportunities – Town of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
The Town of Yarmouth Fire Department is establishing a pool of qualified applicants for upcoming Firefighter/Engineer positions. All candidates who have applied since July 2025 will automatically be included in the pool, which will be reviewed in late January 2026.
About Yarmouth Fire Department
Serving the Yarmouth community since 1837, the Yarmouth Fire Department is committed to fire prevention, public education, and the protection of life and property. The department is a composite team of career and volunteer firefighters, including ten career staff members: a Chief, four Platoon Chiefs, four Firefighters/Engineers, and a Fire Inspector.
Firefighter/Engineer Position Summary
This operational role requires dedication, teamwork, and the ability to respond to emergencies effectively. Responsibilities include:

Driving and operating fire apparatus and emergency vehicles

Fire suppression using hoses, pumps, and extinguishers

Rescuing victims from hazardous situations
-
Administering emergency medical care and first aid
-
Preparing reports on incidents and maintaining records
-
Conducting drills, physical training, and equipment maintenance
-
Participating in fire prevention inspections and public education programs
Qualifications & Requirements
-
Minimum 19 years old
-
Nova Scotia Class 3 Driver’s License (or equivalent)
-
High School Completion Certificate or equivalent
-
Criminal record check and vulnerable sector check upon request
-
Legally entitled to work in Canada
-
Able to live within 40 minutes of the fire hall
-
Strong verbal and written communication skills (bilingual is an asset)
Required Certifications:
-
NFPA 1001 Level I Firefighter
-
ICS (Incident Command System) Level 100
-
NFPA 1002 Pump Operator Certification (or equivalent)
Preferred Qualifications:
-
NFPA 1001 Level II Firefighter
-
Firefighter experience
-
NFPA 1521 Fire Department Safety Officer
-
ICS Level 200
-
Trade apprenticeship or additional education
Work Schedule & Physical Demands
-
Flexible hours, 24-hour shifts, and availability for department obligations outside regular hours
-
Physical work in hazardous environments, extreme weather, and extended periods without rest
Compensation
Salary and benefits are provided as per the collective agreement with the Yarmouth Firefighters Association Local Union No. 2094.
