Central York Fire Services (CYFS) is recruiting Probationary Firefighters for its growing fire service serving the communities of Newmarket and Aurora, Ontario.

🚒 About the CYFS Probationary Firefighter Position
The Probationary Firefighter works as part of an emergency response crew to provide effective service during fires, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, medical emergencies, and other calls.
Firefighters operate under the direction of a Fire Captain, while also being expected to work with limited supervision when circumstances require it.
The position involves significant responsibility, including emergency response, equipment operation and maintenance, public education, fire safety activities, station duties, and maintaining professional competency.
🔥 Firefighter Duties & Responsibilities
CYFS Probationary Firefighters may be responsible for:
🚒 Fire & Emergency Response
- Responding to fire emergencies and performing fireground operations as part of an emergency response crew.
- Operating as part of a team during emergency incidents.
- Responding to emergency rescue calls and carrying out rescue operations.
- Responding to hazardous materials incidents and assisting with mitigation and control operations.
- Responding to medical emergencies and providing emergency patient care.

Firefighters are responsible for operating and maintaining:
- Fire apparatus
- Firefighting equipment
- Rescue equipment
- Other equipment required to mitigate emergency incidents

🏠 Fire Station Duties
Probationary Firefighters perform station duties that help maintain clean, safe, and operational fire stations.
📚 Public Education & Fire Prevention

🎓 CYFS Firefighter Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements.
🔥 NFPA 1001 Firefighter Certification
Applicants must possess:
NFPA 1001 – Firefighter I and II certification, including education and training from an accredited institution.
🏃 OFAI Candidate Testing
Candidates must have valid certificates from the Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Program for:
- Stage One
- Stage Two
- Stage Three
All three stages must be valid at the time of application.
A valid OFAI Swim Test Certificate is required if a candidate is selected for an interview.
⛑️ First Aid & CPR
Applicants must possess:
Intermediate First Aid and CPR-C, or a higher-level certificate.
The certification must remain current throughout the recruitment process.
🚗 Ontario Driver’s Licence
Candidates selected for an interview must possess a valid:
Ontario Class D driver’s licence with Z endorsement.
👁️ Hearing & Vision Requirements
Applicants must meet specific occupational medical requirements.
Hearing
Permitted hearing loss must not exceed 40 decibels, unaided, in either ear at the specified frequencies of:
- 500 Hz
- 1,000 Hz

Vision

NFPA 1582 – Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments.
🎓 Education Requirements

Grade 12 or equivalent, as approved by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
