Firefighter Recruitment Road Map
The dates noted at each recruitment stage are projected timelines.
- Step 1: Apply Online

January 9, 2023 to February 1, 2023
All applicants are required to complete and submit the following as part of their application:
- Complete the online questionnaire
- Upload all certificates required as part of the minimum qualifications
- Submit cover letter and resume
Once you have successfully submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email informing you that your application has been received.

- Step 2: Resume Screening

February 6, 2023 to March 9, 2023
Applicants will initially be reviewed and assessed in relation to the qualifications and experience outlined in the job advertisement. Applicants that most closely meet the qualifications and experience are selected to proceed to the next stage in the selection process.
- Step 3: Situational Judgement Testing

March 29, 2023
Selected applicants will be invited to complete a multiple-choice online situation judgement test (SJT). It is standardized approach that measures candidates and decision making in job relevant situations. Applicants who are successful will proceed to next stage in the process. - Step 4: Situational Behavioural Interviews

April 24, 2023 to May 5, 2023
Applicants who successfully meet the qualifying score for Situation Judgement Testing will be invited to participate in a 1 hour Structured Behavioural Interview with two panel members comprising of one Human Resources Representative and a member from the Brampton Fire and Emergency Services management team.
Applicants that successfully pass both the Situation Judgment Test and Structured behavioural interview will proceed to the next stage.
Note: Applicants may be asked to bring further documentation if required.
- Step 5: Decision Making

May 15, 2023 to May 20, 2023
Candidates that successfully meet the cut-off score for Situational Judgement Testing and Structured Behavioural Interview will then be assessed for optimal fit with organizational goals.
- Step 6: Pre- Employment Checks

May 22, 2023 to June 2, 2023
Pre-employment checks will be conducted for shortlisted candidates and include the following:
- Vulnerable Criminal Record Search (must be provided at this stage)
- Education Verification
- Professional References
- Any additional employment verifications specific to the job requirements
All pre-employment checks must be met in order to proceed to Step 7
- Step 7: Offer of Employment

June 5, 2023 to June 12, 2023
Once all the conditions of employment have been satisfied an offer of employment or an 18 month conditional offer will be extended. This will be followed up with a written offer letter and all the necessary instructions and documents to get you set up as a new City of Brampton employee.
- Step 8: Training

September 5, 2023
All newly hired Firefighters will commence a 14 week training program at our location 129 Glidden Road, Brampton, Ontario.
What are the minimum qualifications for a firefighter?
- High School Diploma;
- Graduate of the Pre-Service Fire Fighter Education & Training Program or NFPA 1001 – Fire Fighter I & II Certified;
- Valid Ontario Class “DZ” Drivers’ license (by the interview stage);
- Valid and current First Aid and CPR Certificate;
- Successful completion of the Ontario Fire Administration-Candidate Testing Program at the time of application www.ofai.ca
