Work Experience Program Recruitment Process

Recruitment for WEP 22 Opens January 1st, 2023.

Step 1:  Applications Received
Step 2:  Applications Reviewed
Step 3:  Selected Candidates will receive an Interview Questionnaire via email
Step 4:  Skype/Zoom Interviews
Step 5:  Reference Checks
Step 6:  Acceptance Offer to Work Experience Program end of March 2022
Step 7:  Tentative Start Date for Program: Monday, May 30th, 2022

WEP Required Qualifications:

• NFPA 1001, B.C. Fire Fighter 1 & 2 OR Equivalent
• PASS A CRIMINAL RECORDS SEARCH
• PASS A DRIVERS LICENSE CHECK AND A DETAILED PERSONAL REFERENCE CHECK
• DOCTOR’S MEDICAL CLEARANCE, OR CERTIFICATE OF FITNESS (FIT TECH, CPAT, YORK)
• CPR “C”/BLS, FIRST AID TRAINING
• CLASS 3 DRIVER’S LICENSE
• AIR BRAKE ENDORSEMENT

Preferred Qualifications:

• EMA licensed FR, EMR or higher
•  Work place first aid OFA 3
•  Technical, Trades or Post Secondary education or experience
•  Previous Fire Fighting, Wildfire, Rescue or Emergency Medical Responder experience

The Big White Fire Department’s Work Experience Program is receiving applications from BC, across Canada, and internationally. When we receive your package each part is graded and scored. A point system is utilized as part of our screening process. Each section is then graded and scored.  As many as fifteen extra points can be awarded for a well organized and complete application package. The applicants with the greatest number of points will move forward in our selection process.

Application packages MUST include the following to be considered complete:

1. WEP Qualifications Checklist (download here)
2. Cover Letter and Resume with current contact information
3. List of your certificates (include all fire and non-fire if applicable, only provide copies of certificates upon request)
4. Educational diplomas (high school, post secondary or trade school)
5. Criminal record check
6. Driver’s abstract & copy of driver’s license
7. NFPA 1001 level 1 & 2 Certificates
8. NFPA 472 Hazmat Ops Certificate
9. Three reference letters (from employers, volunteer experience, etc.) with their current contact information
10. Doctor’s medical clearance (download here) or certificate of fitness.  (York, CPAT, Brock, OFAI or equivalent)
