Location: Oakville, Ontario
Firefighters with the Town of Oakville work within an Incident Command System to protect life and property during fires, medical emergencies, rescues and other emergency incidents. The position requires physical fitness, teamwork, professionalism, problem-solving skills and the ability to perform effectively in demanding environments.
Firefighters also contribute to fire prevention, public education and community safety initiatives.
๐ Firefighter Responsibilities
Oakville Fire Department firefighters may be responsible for:
- Responding to fires, medical emergencies and other emergency incidents.
- Performing fire suppression and rescue operations.
- Protecting life and property in hazardous conditions.
- Providing emergency medical assistance.
- Working within the Incident Command System.
- Maintaining firefighting equipment, apparatus and fire stations.
- Participating in training and skills development.
- Supporting public fire safety education.
- Working with other emergency services and agencies.
- Performing station duties and routine responsibilities during 24-hour shifts.
- Maintaining a high standard of professionalism and readiness.
๐ Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet all required qualifications by the application deadline.
NFPA Firefighter Certification
Candidates must have successfully completed an NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I and II education and training program from an accredited institution or fire department.
OFAI Testing
Applicants must possess:
- OFAI Candidate Testing Service Stage 1
- OFAI Candidate Testing Service Stage 2
Stage 1 and Stage 2 requirements must meet the validity requirements outlined in the recruitment posting.
๐ Swim Test
Applicants must have successfully completed either:
- Lifesaving Society Canadian Swim to Survive Standard, or
- OFAI Swim Test
The certification must be valid at the time of application.
Candidates who progress in the recruitment process must also successfully complete the Oakville Fire Department swim test.
๐ Education
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or academic equivalent.
๐ Driver’s Licence
Applicants must possess:
- Valid, unrestricted Ontario Class D driver’s licence
- Z air brake endorsement
- Safe and responsible driving record
- Applicants with 6 or more demerit points are ineligible
A driver’s abstract will be required at the conditional offer stage.

Applicants must possess current:
- Standard First Aid
- CPR certification

Successful candidates must provide a satisfactory Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
โญ Preferred Firefighter Qualifications
The following qualifications can strengthen an applicant’s candidacy:
- Post-secondary education.
- NFPA Operations or Technician-level certifications.
- Rope rescue training.
- Confined space rescue training.
- Water and ice rescue training.
- Hazardous materials response training.
- Emergency Medical Responder certification.
- Paramedic, police, military or medical experience.
- Volunteer or career firefighting experience.
- Skilled trades or apprenticeship experience.
- Heavy equipment experience.
- Dispatch or emergency communications experience.
- Additional specialized emergency services training.
- Community volunteer experience.
- Ability to communicate in additional languages.
๐งช Additional Recruitment Testing
Candidates selected to continue in the recruitment process may be required to successfully complete the Oakville Fire Department Firefighter Physical Aptitude Test (FPAT), as well as technical and behavioural assessments.
Successful candidates will also be required to complete a medical screening satisfactory to the Town.
๐ Firefighter Work Schedule
Oakville Fire Fighters work 24-hour shifts and live and work together as a team throughout their shift. The position requires firefighters to work effectively in emergency situations while also completing station duties, training and equipment maintenance.
๐ฐ Oakville Firefighter Salary
The Probationary Fire Fighter rate is $74,240.
The position is permanent and full-time and is represented by the OPFFA.
