🚨 Firefighter Job Overview
Position: Probationary Firefighter
Employer: City of Cambridge
Department: Cambridge Fire Department
Schedule: 24-hour rotating shifts (including weekends and holidays)
Salary: $65,797 (first 6 months – 55% of First Class rate)

🔥 Firefighter Responsibilities
Firefighters with the City of Cambridge are responsible for emergency response and public safety services.
Emergency Response
- Respond to fires, rescues, and medical emergencies
- Perform fire suppression, ventilation, and search operations
- Operate hoses, ladders, and firefighting equipment
Rescue and Medical Aid
- Provide rescue services and emergency medical care
- Assist injured persons and support patient care
Fire Prevention and Public Education
- Participate in inspections and fire prevention programs
- Deliver public education through community outreach
Equipment and Station Maintenance
- Maintain fire apparatus, tools, and station facilities
- Ensure all equipment is operational and ready for response
Training and Development
- Maintain physical fitness and professional certifications
- Assist in training and mentoring other firefighters
✅ Required Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements.
Basic Requirements
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Fluent in English (written and verbal)
Firefighter Certifications
Candidates must possess:
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I & II (including Hazmat Operations)
- OFAI Candidate Testing Services (Stages 1, 2, and 3)
OFAI Requirements:
- Encapsulated treadmill test (valid at deadline)
- Swim test (valid at deadline)
- FPAT (Stage 3)
Medical and First Aid
- First Responder Certificate (or higher)
- BLS CPR certification
Driver’s Licence
- Ontario Class D Driver’s Licence
- Z Air Brake Endorsement
- Clean driver’s abstract (low demerit points)
Additional Requirements
- Valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
- Successful Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
⭐ Preferred Qualifications (Assets)
Candidates with the following will be considered strong applicants:
- NFPA 1035 Public Educator Level 1
- NFPA 1002 Pumper Operator
- Firefighter or emergency services experience
- AEMCA or advanced medical certification
- Skilled trades certification
- Post-secondary education
- Volunteer or community service experience
- Additional language skills
