The City of Fort St. John is hiring Full-Time Permanent Fire Fighters for its Suppression Division. This is an exciting opportunity to join a progressive municipal fire department serving one of British Columbia’s fastest-growing northern communities.

Firefighters work under the direction of a Suppression Captain or Lieutenant and respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents including fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, and medical aid. Members also participate in fire prevention, public education, inspections, equipment maintenance, and ongoing professional training.


💰 Salary

$37.62 per hour (2024 Rate – Months 1–6)
IAFF Union Position


🔥 Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency calls: structure fires, vehicle incidents, rescues, medical emergencies, and hazmat events

  • Perform fire suppression and rescue operations as part of a team

  • Participate in fire prevention inspections and public education programs

  • Maintain fire apparatus, equipment, and station facilities

  • Complete pre-fire planning and training exercises

  • Comply with Occupational Health & Safety standards

  • Represent the Department professionally within the community


✅ Required Qualifications

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent

  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter II (Pro-Board or IFSAC)

  • NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Operations Level

  • BC EMA First Responder License, EMR, PCP or equivalent

  • Valid BC Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Endorsement

  • Ability to pass a Police Information Check (Vulnerable Sector)

  • Medical and physical standards meeting NFPA 1582


⭐ Preferred Qualifications (Highly Competitive Assets)

  • NFPA 472 Hazmat Technician

  • NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator

  • NFPA 1006 Technical Rescue (Vehicle, Rope, Confined Space)

  • ICS 100 Certification

  • Wildland Fire (SPP-WFF 1)

  • Aircraft Firefighting (CARs 323)

  • Post-secondary education (academic, trades, or technical)

  • Experience in emergency services (Fire, Coast Guard, SAR, EMS)

  • Demonstrated commitment to fitness and community involvement
