Position Purpose
Suppression Firefighters provide emergency response, fire suppression, rescue, hazardous material management, and emergency medical aid. The role also includes fire prevention, public education, inspections, and apparatus maintenance. Firefighters operate under the direction of fire captains and are expected to uphold professionalism, integrity, and teamwork while maintaining high physical and technical standards.
Key Responsibilities

Operate and maintain fire apparatus and equipment

Respond to fires, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and emergencies
-
Administer emergency medical aid (BLS/EFR)
-
Conduct public education and fire prevention inspections
-
Develop pre-incident plans
-
Participate in physical training and drills
-
Perform station, grounds, and equipment maintenance
-
Follow chain of command and carry out orders of senior officers
-
Maintain safety in compliance with policies and occupational standards
Essential Qualifications
-
Minimum 18 years of age, legally entitled to work in Canada
-
Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
-
Valid Ontario Class “D” driver’s license with “Z” endorsement (<4 demerit points)

NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II Certification (Pro Board or IFSAC)
-
NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations Certification
-
Ability to work 24-hour rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays

Valid BLS or Emergency Fire Responder (EFR) certification
-
Fitness and medical testing completed at York University
-
Proficient swimming skills for water/ice rescue
-
Ability to work at heights, confined spaces, and with safety equipment
Preferred Qualifications

Post-secondary education in related fields

NFPA 1002 Pump Operations Certification

Advanced medical or firefighter training
-
Volunteer or career suppression firefighter experience

Residency within Whitchurch-Stouffville
