The City of Burlington is now accepting applications for multiple Firefighter vacancies for the 2026 recruitment intake. This is a full-time, onsite position located at Fire Station 1 and the Headquarters Administration Building. 2026 Salary: $66,850 (effective January 2026)

Position Overview: Probationary Firefighter

As a Burlington Probationary Firefighter, you will join a skilled team of emergency professionals committed to protecting the community. Firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies, including:

  • Structural and vehicle fires

  • Motor vehicle collisions

  • Medical emergencies

  • Hazardous materials incidents

  • Rope, surface water, and ice water rescues

Firefighters also contribute to public education, fire prevention initiatives, and the maintenance of stations, equipment, and apparatus. Ongoing training and physical fitness are essential components of this role.

Mandatory Qualifications

To apply, candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Legally eligible to work in Canada

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent

  • Ability to provide a clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening (required upon conditional offer)

  • Valid Ontario Class DZ driver’s licence with acceptable abstract (no more than 3 driving-related convictions or 3 demerit points in the past 3 years)

  • Current First Aid and CPR Level C certification

  • NFPA 1001 Level I & II completed

  • Successful completion of all seven components of the Firefighter Services of Ontario (FSO) Screening Test

Documents Required Upon Eligibility

Applicants meeting the above qualifications must provide:

  1. Resume

  2. Proof of education

  3. First Aid & CPR certificates

  4. Proof of Class D licence with Z endorsement

  5. Proof of NFPA 1001 Level I & II

  6. Proof of preferred qualifications (if applicable as per Recruitment Guide)

FSO will forward all applicant documentation directly to the City of Burlington.

FSO Testing Requirements

Completion of all required FSO tests is mandatory. Applicants must pre-register with Firefighter Services of Ontario for:

  1. Clinical Evaluation

  2. CPS Aptitude Examination

  3. CPAT

  4. Tread Water Test

  5. Hearing & Vision Screening

  6. Acrophobia Test

  7. Emotional Stability & Resiliency Assessment
