Why Work as a Firefighter in Airdrie?

The Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) is hiring full-time firefighters to help serve our rapidly growing community. With the opening of our 4th firehall in 2026, this is an exciting opportunity to join a high-performing, innovative fire department.

  • Respond to fires, rescues, and emergency medical calls
  • Serve as a Primary or Advanced Care Paramedic
  • Participate in fire prevention, inspections, and pre-planning

Work Schedule: 24/7 shift work including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays.

Qualifications & Certifications

Required:

  • NFPA 1001 Level I & II Certification (IFSAC or PROBoard)
  • NFPA 472 or 1072 Hazardous Materials Certification – Operations Level
  • Class 1, 2, or 3 driver’s license with air brake (Q) endorsement; ≤6 demerits
  • Alberta College of Paramedics Primary or Advanced Care Paramedic practice permit
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and under physically demanding conditions
  • Strong teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills

Assets:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field
  • Safety Codes Officer qualification

Firefighter Fitness Requirements

Applicants must complete one of the following fitness tests (valid for 12 months):

  • University of Alberta Firefighter Fitness Test
  • Red Deer Polytechnic Firefighter Applicant Physical Aptitude Test
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

Cost: $200 – $400 (applicant responsibility)

Tentative Start Dates: April 2026 or September 2026. This competition may create an eligibility list for future firefighter positions.
