Firefighter

Community Services Department, Orangeville Fire Service

(Two Full-time positions, 24-hour shifts on a rotational basis with 2184 hours per year)

 

The Town of Orangeville (“Town”) has two (2) opportunity available for the position of Firefighter. Reporting to the respective Captain, Firefighters protect life and property through firefighting, emergency medical and other types of emergency responses while maintaining a high standard of professionalism. Firefighters also educate the public about fire prevention and fire safety practices.

 

Job Duties:

  • Performing all emergency scene duties including firefighting, forcible entry, search and rescue, carrying hoses, climbing ladders, hooking hoses up to hydrants, breaking through walls and ceilings, protecting those in danger due to a fire, overhaul, technical rescues, emergency medical treatment and CPR hazardous materials scene support, property conservation, environmental conservation, and securing emergency scenes.
  • Training in preparation for emergency responses; completing all required training and retraining as assigned; and participating in pre-planning to become familiar with immediate response area and new or unusual buildings in the station’s response area, and with streets and roads under construction.
  • Cleaning, inspecting and maintaining equipment and apparatus; conducting full maintenance/safety checks of vehicles and equipment; and performing routine preventative maintenance tasks to equipment and apparatus.
  • Keeping fire station, equipment, quarters, and grounds clean and orderly.
  • Working effectively with the crew and other first responders, such as police, paramedics, and other agencies, maintaining a high standard of professionalism; and responding to Mutual Aid requests from neighbouring fire departments.
  • Drives/operates apparatus in accordance with policy and Highway Traffic Act.
  • After returning from emergency scene, cleaning, inspecting, and accounting for all equipment used and returning all equipment used to a state of readiness.
  • Performing in-service home inspections for compliance with smoke and carbon monoxide alarm legislation and performing in-service commercial inspections.
  • Attending Public Events to provide fire education and public relations and assisting the Fire Prevention Division with fire education demonstration.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & Firefighter II certified
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience working as a fully certified firefighter and presently working as a full-time/volunteer/part-time/paid on call structural firefighter with a municipal fire department.
  • NFPA 1002 – Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator, Ontario Fire College Pumper Operations Certification or equivalent. Proof of certification will be required.  The Town of Orangeville will accept applications from those candidates’ awaiting results from OFM and Academic Standards & Evaluations (AS&E).
  • Valid and unrestricted Ontario class “D” driver’s license with a “Z” air brake endorsement
  • Valid C.P.R. and Standard First Aid Certificate – Healthcare Provider
  • High standard of professional customer service
  • Problem solving skills, initiative, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, and mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be fit and able to handle the sustained, intense physical and psychological effort required to perform duties of this position.
  • Willingness and ability to work in extremely adverse and dangerous situations.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks/demands, work with a team, work independently with minimal supervision, and work and positively interact within a diverse work environment.

 

Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check, including but not limited to a Vulnerable Sector Check, in accordance with the duties of this position.

 

Salary:  In accordance with the collective agreement between the Corporation of the Town of Orangeville and the Orangeville Professional Firefighters Association
