The Town of Truro will receive applications for a Firefighter Engineer position with the Truro Fire
Service. This is a full-time position and is subject to International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF),
Local Union 1627 Collective Agreement.

NATURE OF THE POSITION:
Under the direction of the Fire Chief, the Fighter/Engineer is responsible for operating fire apparatus,
firefighting, rescue and other related services within the scope of the position. The Fire Fighter/Engineer
is responsible for rapidly, efficiently and safely performing various duties under emergency conditions
frequently involving considerable hazard. The work includes routine duties in the maintenance of
firefighting vehicles, equipment and fire department facilities. The Fire Fighter/Engineer shall
participate in programs for the prevention of fires, saving of life and property and public safety education.
The Fire Fighter/Engineer may be responsible for emergency operations until command is assumed by

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Completion of High School or equivalent.
• NFPA 1001 Level 1 certified Fire Fighter or equivalent.
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certifications.
• Class 3 Nova Scotia Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.
• Physically able to perform the demanding tasks of this position. Physical agility and fitness must
be met and maintained.
• Experience working with diverse populations or knowledge of cultural safety practices is
considered an asset.
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of firefighting tactics and strategy.
• Knowledge of emergency incident management.
• Knowledge of firefighting occupational health and safety.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation and codes; (e.g. Municipal Government Act, Fire Safety Act &
Regulation, National Fire Code of Canada, Nova Scotia Building Code, NFPA Codes and
Standards, etc.)

POSITION SUMMARY:

RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:
➢ Respond to emergency calls, lays and connect hose to hydrant, operates apparatus and
/or holds nozzles and directs water streams, raises and climbs ladders, uses
extinguishers and other equipment. performs necessary firefighting and rescue activities,
under the supervision of the Fire Chief, or designate.
➢ Perform necessary firefighting and rescue activities, under the supervision of the Fire
Chief, or designate.
➢ Respond to non-emergency calls , as required.
➢ Drive and operate department apparatus and equipment.
➢ Maintain all Fire Service apparatus, equipment and facilities, in conjunction with daily
duties, contract agreement, and within the scope of personal qualification abilities.
➢ Conduct fire prevention inspections and participate in drills and inspections.
➢ Complete reports and maintain vital incident information for investigative and record
keeping purposes.
➢ Participate in the development and delivery of public education and fire prevention
programs to internal staff and the public.
➢ Conduct pre-inspections and post inspections, as direction by the fire inspector and/or
designate upon completion of in-house training.
➢ Participate in on-going training.
➢ Responsible for workplace safety as outlined in the NS Occupational Health and Safety
Act and organizational policies, procedures and guidelines.
➢ Work as a member of a team with minimal supervision.
➢ Follow direction and operate within a chain of command.
➢ Other duties as may be required, within the scope of the position.

crawling, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time.
➢ Work in inclement weather conditions.
➢ Work on a rotating shift schedule including call back while off duty.
