Work Experience Program

Our 2025 Work Experience Program is now open for applications! 

Proven to help aspiring firefighters get hired!

For years Sun Peaks’ Work Experience Program has helped aspiring firefighters reach their goals. The training and on-the-job experience that our members receive provides them with an edge in a very competitive job market. This opportunity gives applicants a unique opportunity to learn and develop skills in a program that has generated results – year after year.

Program Details:

Commitment

  • Six month volunteer program (May – October)
  • Training provided 3-4 days a week

Responsibilities

  • Response to fire, rescue, and medical emergencies
  • Apparatus and equipment checks
  • Fire hall maintenance
  • Public education
  • Commercial fire inspections
  • On-call duty shifts
  • Potential deployment for BC Wildfire Service
  • Other duties in keeping with the responsibilities of a rookie firefighter in a career hall as directed by the Officer in Command

Training Provided

  • NFPA 1002 – Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications, JIBC
  • Live Fire Training
  • Wildland Fire Operations and Safety for the Structural Fire Fighter (WSPP-WFF1)
  • Company Inspections, JIBC
  • Emergency Scene Traffic Control, BCMSA
  • Interview Coaching
  • Other potential courses including Engine Boss, Elevator Rescue, etc.

Cost

  • There is no cost to this program
  • Accommodation is provided in lieu of six month commitment
  • All training and materials are provided as part of your volunteer commitment to Sun Peaks Fire Rescue.

Entrance Requirements

  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter 1 & 2 plus HAZMAT Ops with IFSAC or PROBOARD accreditation
  • Valid First Responder III or Emergency Medical Responder Certificate (no older than July 2024) or BCEMA First Responder License
  • Valid BC class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent) with air brake endorsement
  • Sun Peaks Fire Rescue Firefighter Medical Examination
  • Recent Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector check
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 19 Years of age or older
  • Canadian Citizen or permanent resident

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid EMR or PCP license category
  • Technical, Trades, or Post Secondary education
  • Previous Fire Fighting, Rescue, or Emergency Medical Responder experience
  • Volunteer experience with a non-fire / non-medical organization
