FIREFIGHTER

We are looking for a Firefighter to join our team! This role is responsible for carrying out activities associated with the department and, ensuring safe, effective, and efficient firefighting and rescue techniques and procedures are followed leading to a safe conclusion.

 

Reporting to the Fire Captain, the Firefighter plays an integral role in the operations of the Fire Department and the various regional Fire Halls.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the Direction of the Captain (Fulltime), assist with day-to-day operations of the Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service.
  • Provide fire services and emergency scene evaluation, tactics to be employed, employing resources to effectively and efficiently bring the situation to a safe conclusion; provide timely assistance and /or guidance in response to varied customer concerns.
  • Upon designation, direct/supervise personnel, apparatus, equipment and property of the Department at emergency scenes, ensuring strict compliance with standard operating guidelines of the department under the direct supervision and direction of the Truck/Company Officer, Sector Officer.
  • Post-incident general upkeep and orderliness of the fire station and the maintenance and operation of all emergency equipment and apparatus.
  • Work collaboratively with other municipal staff and in the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River No. 124 and the Town of Slave Lake, building partnerships with these municipal partners and provincial agencies to advance the interests of effective fire and rescue services for the area.
  • Promote fire prevention throughout the region through inspections, public appearances and public education programs.
  • Assist in the general upkeep and orderliness of each fire station and the maintenance and operation of all emergency equipment and apparatus.
  • Consult with supervisors regarding approval of fire service policy/direction/priorities and interpretation of Town of Slave Lake and MD of Lesser Slave River policies/procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required or as responsibilities necessitate.
  • Utilize Preventative measures to reduce wildfire threat to Albertans and their communities by supporting and working on the 7 disciplines of Firesmart, including surgical vegetation management work and hazard reduction burning. The remainder may include project work, proficiency training, or deployment to other regions while waiting for fire action.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent.
  • NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 Firefighter.
  • NFPA 1072 Operations.
  • NFPA 1002 driver/aerial operator/pump operator would be considered an asset.
  • NFPA 1006 in any of these areas, Water/Rope/Confined Space Technician would be considered an asset.
  • NFPA 1072 Technician would be considered an asset.
  • 80-hour medical course (EMR, AFA, MFR).
  • Primary Card Paramedic (ACP registered) would be considered a strong asset.
  • Must hold an Alberta Class 5 driver’s license, or equivalent with Q endorsement and provide drivers abstract.
  • ICS 100.

  • Split second strategic or tactical decisions made in emergencies that are positively or negatively impacted: life safety, degree of victim trauma, extent of property damage, business revenue and wage loss, liability, insurance premiums, etc.

      WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work outdoors and indoors in any weather conditions
  • Work in an enclosed vehicle, such as a fire truck, daily.
  • Always wear specialized safety gear and a special uniform. Regularly wear specialized equipment, such as oxygen tanks.
  • Are regularly exposed to hazardous equipment.
  • Are often exposed to contaminants.
  • Are often exposed to very hot or very cold temperatures.
  • Are regularly exposed to hazardous situations and conditions. Because of this, firefighters may suffer cuts, bites, stings, and minor burns.
  • Are exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable on a weekly basis.
  • Are often exposed to cramped workplaces that require getting into awkward positions.
  • Are often exposed to extremely bright or dim lighting conditions.
  • Sometimes are exposed to high places.
  • Work very near each other and other people, sometimes within inches. Firefighters often have to physically assist victims when escaping a dangerous situation.

  HEALTH & SAFETY:

  All personnel working at the Town of Slave Lake are governed by the Health & Safety Policy.

  • Ensure proper ergonomic requirements are met and good ergonomic procedures are practiced
  • Ensures all operations are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with Town Policies and all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
