This opportunity is ideal for applicants looking to begin or advance a firefighting career in Northern Ontario. Successful applicants may be considered for future full-time Firefighter positions.

Firefighter Recruitment & Selection Process

Eligible candidates will participate in a multi-stage assessment process, which may include:

  • Medical Assessment (Vision & Hearing)

  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

  • Acrophobia (Height Tolerance) Test

  • Clinical Assessment

  • Tread Water Test

  • Firefighter Aptitude Exam

  • Emotional Stability & Resiliency Assessment

  • Human Relations Assessment

  • Interview Stage(s)

Mandatory Firefighter Requirements (Proof Required)

To be considered for the 2026 Firefighter Reserve List, applicants must provide documentation confirming:

Education & Licensing

  • Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent)

  • Valid, unrestricted Ontario Class DZ driver’s licence

  • Current Driver’s Abstract (issued within the last 30 days)

Medical & Safety Certifications

  • Valid First Aid & CPR Level C

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification (preferred)

Firefighter Certifications

  • NFPA 1001 Level I & II (IFSAC or Pro Board)

  • NFPA 1072 (formerly 472) Hazardous Materials – Awareness & Operations

  • Alternatively: OFMEM Grandfathering Letter confirming NFPA 1001 Level I & II equivalency

  • Candidates may apply if NFPA 1001 is in progress prior to November 21, 2025, with completion by May 21, 2026
