Reporting to the Fire Chief or designate, the Firefighter works as a team member to respond to various emergencies,
which may entail combating and extinguishing fires, saving lives and property, medical incidents, dangerous goods, and
emergency rescues. Duties also include performing fire prevention and public education services under the general
supervision of a senior officer, maintaining apparatus through daily inspection and routine preventative maintenance,
participation in required training, and various other duties that may be performed during other emergencies and
non-emergencies that may need the assistance of the fire department.

Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, IFSAC and/or Pro Board certified to NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I and II
with NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations.
• Possess or able to obtain Medical First Responder/Emergency Medical Responder certification.
• Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license with air brake endorsement, and ability to obtain a Class 3 and Class 4 BC driver’s
license.
• Must be fit and able to handle the sustained, intense physical and psychological effort required to perform this
position and must be willing and able to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions;
• Must be able to communicate effectively, work well in a team, and be able to work with a minimum amount of
supervision. Additionally, the ability to maintain pleasant and effective relations with the public and fellow
firefighters even under adverse conditions or circumstances; and
• This position is considered a position of trust within the Municipality and the successful applicant must
successfully pass a Police Information Check including a Vulnerable Sector check.

Status/Hours/Shifts

Full-time; Permanent, an average of 42 hours per week; shift work (including evenings and weekends will be required)
Rate
Firefighter: As per the IAFF Local 2782 Collective Agreement. The probationary rate is 70% of FF1 for the first 6 months,
then 75% up to 1 year, 80% for the 2nd year, and 90% for the 3rd year. The current FF1 rate is $9,361.50/month: $51.25/
hr. Please note this is the 2023 rate and is subject to change.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Summary

Reporting to the Fire Chief or designate, the firefighter works as a member of a team to respond to a variety of
emergency situations which may entail the combating and extinguishing of fires, saving of life and property, medical
incidents, dangerous goods, and emergency rescues. Duties also include performing fire prevention and public
education services under the general supervision of a senior officer, maintaining apparatus through daily inspection and
routine preventative maintenance, participation in required training, and various other duties which may be performed
during other emergencies and non-emergencies that may require the assistance of the fire department.

Responsibilities:

1. Emergency Duties

• Performs all emergency scene duties assigned such as but not limited to, firefighting, forcible entry,
search and rescue, carrying hoses, climbing ladders, hooking hoses up to hydrants, breaking through
walls and ceilings, protecting those in danger due to a fire, overhaul, technical rescues, emergency
medical treatment and CPR hazardous materials scene support, property conservation, environmental
conservation, and secures emergency scene for the safety of the public and other Firefighters.
• Operates all equipment utilized by NRFR such as pumps, hoses, manual ladders, mechanical ladders,
generators, automobile extrication equipment, etc.
• Immediately responds in a timely fashion and deals with fire, medical, rescue, and other emergency and
non-emergency related calls as required.
• Drives/operates any apparatus/vehicles in accordance with policy and any relevant Provincial or Federal
legislation.
• Receives and records emergency calls and performs the proper dispatch for the call.
• Conducts inspections and helps ensure an emergency scene is in compliance with fire/life safety
guidelines, prior to leaving the scene.
• After returning from the emergency scene cleans, inspects, and accounts for all equipment used andreturns all equipment used to a state of readiness.

2. Non-Emergency Duties

• Cleans, inspects, and maintains equipment and apparatus.
• Conducts full maintenance/safety checks of vehicles and equipment.
• Performs routine preventative maintenance tasks to equipment and apparatus.
• Keeps fire station, equipment, quarters, and grounds clean and orderly on a daily basis.
• Educates the public about fire prevention and fire safety practices
• As assigned, assist in the development of pre-fire plans.
• Under the general supervision of a superior officer, perform; prevention inspections and public
education programs.
• Perform clerical duties as required in the day-to-day operations.
• Participate and assist in the training of POC (paid on-call) firefighters.
• Continually strive to upgrade skills and knowledge through regular training and by taking such courses as
are offered.
• Maintain confidentiality of all events surrounding emergency operations.
• Practice safe working habits at all times.

Exercise considerable independence of judgment and action in circumstances of extreme emergency where
referral to a superior officer for instruction is not always possible.

Decisions consistently affect other NRFR personnel and the provision of fire services to the residents of the
Northern Rockies Regional Municipality. Error in judgment could have an irreversible impact on life and/or
property.

This is a non-supervisory position.
5. Occupational Health & Safety
Reports immediately, to the designated supervisor, all accidents or injuries and activates emergency procedures
as required; detects and reports observed hazardous conditions, practices, and behaviors in the workplace.

• the principles and skills required to perform hazardous material and rescue operations;• the rules and regulations of the fire department;
• building construction and related codes;
• hydraulics;
• water systems and water mains; and
• the fire protection area, including target hazards, hydrants, and hazardous occupancies.
Ability to:
• communicate effectively, work well in a team, and be able to work with a minimum of supervision;
• safely operate firefighting and rescue equipment including motor vehicles;
• react quickly and remain calm under duress and strain;
• understand and follow oral and written instructions;
• carry out specific orders and directions as received from a superior officer; and
• maintain pleasant and effective relations with the public and fellow firefighters even under adverse
conditions or circumstances.

• NFPA 1041 Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I
• NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I
