Position Conditions:  Brandon Fire and Emergency Services will be considering the following for this hiring process: – Firefighter / Paramedics are Graduates of a recognized public fire protection program or, are volunteer firefighter/paramedics that have completed all the necessary courses in the Public Fire Protection Program or the Public Fire Paramedic Program; as such, the majority of their training in fire suppression and rescue has been completed. Throughout their career, it is expected that firefighter/paramedics take on various roles in the department; therefore, further upgrading of technical skills is an important focus. There are a variety of courses coordinated by the Training Officers to ensure high performance levels are maintained in providing service to citizens while assisting members in career development.

 

NOTE:  Candidates who do not currently hold valid CFFM FPFE certification must register with the University of Manitoba to obtain the CFFM FPFE certification.  Applicants are responsible for registering through the U of M. All costs with the CFFM FPFE certification are borne by the applicant. Detailed information regarding registering can be found in Appendix 4 in the Applicant Handbook.

Rate of Pay:  $34.86 – $50.84 – July 1, 2024 rates

This competition will include testing and an interview.

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

 

A Firefighter/Paramedic will deliver, as a member of the emergency services team, firefighting, emergency medical services, rescue and non-emergency services in Brandon and the surrounding area.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responds to fire alarms to combat, control, and extinguish fires and to perform the necessary duties related to firefighting such as ventilation, search and rescue, overhaul and salvage;
  • Responds to emergency calls for medical assistance and performs emergency medical duties at the PCP level as per Manitoba Health Guidelines and Protocols and/or Department standards;
  • Receives incoming emergency and business calls and assists in the logging of information and dispatching of appropriate personnel and equipment as per General Operating Guidelines or as directed;
  • Attends all In-House training sessions to maintain a level of competence and certification satisfactory to meet all Fire Department standards and participates in external training sessions as directed and required;
  • Maintains records and prepares forms and reports required through the delivery of the emergency services;
  • Cleans, operates, and maintains fire, rescue, and ambulance vehicles, equipment, personal protective gear, and all other related apparatus to Department standards;
  • Performs housekeeping and routine maintenance tasks of emergency services facilities and grounds as required or assigned;
  • Performs public fire education and fire prevention duties as directed;
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

WORK CONDITIONS:

The Firefighter/Paramedic works in a team environment.

  • Work in a shared and consultative manner with other employees (daily);
  • Self motivated and quality driven to perform independent projects and facilitate team goals (daily);
  • Necessary to work in all types of weather conditions (daily);
  • Works in areas of confined space, heights, unpleasant noise levels, hazardous environments, and adverse odours (daily);
  • Shall be available to work varying shifts and overtime and call outs (occasionally);
  • Responsible to the Captain or designate.
